Could you share a bit about yourself with us?

catherineHi, I’m from Columbus, Ohio. I’ve lived here all my life and I love it here. The people here are laidback and helpful. We have our own friendly community and we organize several games once a month. Ever since I was young, I was always athletically inclined and I loved sports. I got picked for my college team and have been going great with academics and sports as well. I’ve never thought that one day I would get to choose writing as a career.

What was going through your mind when you found out that you’d won?

I can’t remember from all the excitement, but I was definitely surprised for sure! What made it even sweeter was the fact that this was the first time that I’ve written for a scholarship. To win it feels great! I feel like I’m walking on clouds right about now. There are so many things that this scholarship can solve. To be honest though, I had no hope I was going to win and all this was going to be a first time experiment!

How much of a help is this scholarship award of $1000?

The answer is: a huge help! Considering that education is pretty expensive you need to make sure that you secure some other means of making ends meet, so to speak. I used to save up money, and I’m still going to. But this windfall has been a huge help and will encourage other people to participate and give their best at it.

Any thoughts on the test that you would like to share?

Well, the questions were pretty straightforward and I could write on it as well. I love sharing my experiences with my friends and this was just another way to express myself is what I felt. And there are a lot of people who participated in this, so I guess I’m not alone when I say that the questions were good.

What do you think about the difficulty of finding scholarships in the US?

Considering that this is my first time, I guess I’m not the right person to comment on this. But several of my friends were unable to get into the courses they wanted because they weren’t able to save up enough. They’ve told me that it’s really tough to land a scholarship

What were your options to add more to your college funds?

I had to take up several odd-jobs and part time work at place. Mowing lawns, walking dogs, working at eateries were some of the methods I used to get some savings. But considering that I won this, I can relax for a bit and maybe pick up a few extra classes to give me that edge next year!
