Yes, It’s Possible To Add Two Sounds To A TikTok Video

We’ve all watched enough TV and streaming shows to know that different types of music should often be used in different parts of a video, particularly a long one. A bouncy song is inappropriate for a sad moment in the production, but perfect for a happy resolution.

However, when you’re creating TikTok content in the social media platform’s built-in editor, it seems impossible to use two different sounds in the same video. As soon as you choose a second song to include, the first one vanishes — and there’s seemingly no way around the problem.

You’ve probably seen TikTok posts that include two different pieces of music, though, which makes the issue doubly frustrating. How come those content creators could do it, but you can’t?

There are two possibilities.

  • They’ve used a third-party editor to create their video before uploading it to TikTok.
  • They know how to get around the app’s editing restrictions.

Third-party choices like CapCut are ideal for more elaborate editing tasks, including the use of multiple audio tracks. Since CapCut is owned by TikTok’s parent company, it’s also pretty easy for TikTok users to figure out; that makes the app the best option for adding two sounds to a single TikTok video.

Many people have no desire to learn another app, however, particularly if they don’t plan on regularly adding multiple songs to their content. For those folks, there’s a workaround that lets them put two sounds into the same video while using TikTok’s editor.

Read on.

How To Add Two Sounds on TikTok

Spoiler alert: You’re not going to be able to add two different songs to a video in the same editing session. That’s the secret that most people don’t realize. You’ll have to add the first sound, save the video to your phone, and then re-upload the half-finished video so you can finish the job.

  1. Hit the “+” button at the bottom of your TikTok home screen to enter the “Create” screen.
  2. If you’re starting with previously-shot video stored on your phone’s camera reel, upload it into the editor by tapping the “Upload” icon that’s just to the right of the Record button.
  3. Otherwise, hit the “Record” button to create your new video. Tap the checkmark when you’re finished.
  4. You’re now in the TikTok editor. Tap the “Add sound” button at the top, and select the first sound you want to add to your video.
  5. Now, click on the “Edit” icon (it looks like a monitor) on the right-hand menu. Below the preview window, you’ll see your video’s timeline; tap on the sound timeline (below the frame-by-frame video timeline).
  6. Scroll the sound timeline until you reach the point of the video where you want the first sound to end. “Grab” the two handles on the sound timeline and slide the right-hand handle to the left until you only see the sound under the first part of your video; the second part will have no audio track.
  7. Tap the red arrow at the top right of the screen to reach the “Posting” page. Find the “Everyone can view this post” option and set it to “Only you.” This will upload the partially-finished video to TikTok but hide it from viewers; more importantly, it will also save the work-in-progress to your camera reel.
  8. Now, go back to step one by tapping the “+” button to enter the “Create screen,” and upload the video you’ve been working on to the editor. Choose another sound and repeat the process we’ve just described, adjusting the sound timeline so the second sound only plays in the second portion of the video.
  9. Finish editing and upload your post. If desired, delete the first version of your video from your TikTok account.

Yes, the process is a bit cumbersome — but, to be honest, no one ever said that producing complicated videos would be a walk in the park. If you prefer, learn how to use CapCut in conjunction with TikTok; the time you spend will be well worth the investment!
