It can be weird if a TikTok user seems to vanish from the social media platform.
Maybe you’ve gotten accustomed to seeing their TikTok posts on your feed but they’re not there anymore. Maybe you interact regularly with mutuals but can’t DM them, or one of their TikTok videos has disappeared from your favorites.
What’s going on?
Two possibilities are most likely: either they’ve blocked you or they’ve decided to delete their account.
Here’s how to tell the difference.
Determining Whether You’re Blocked or A TikTok User Is Gone
You’ll see many of the same signs when someone blocks your account that you do when their account is no longer active.
- Their account won’t show up if you use TikTok search to look for their username; you’ll just see “Account Not Found.”
- You can’t see the other user’s videos or reposts.
- They’ll no longer be on your “following” or “followers” list, if they were there before they vanished.
There are some slight differences in what you will see, though.
- If you reposted one of their videos, you’ll no longer be able to see the repost if they’ve blocked you. If they’ve deleted their account you’ll still see it, but under a generic username.
- If you try to message them from a previous DM stream but they’ve blocked you, the stream will appear under a “User Not Found” heading and you won’t be able to send new messages. If they’re no longer on TikTok, DMs won’t work and the stream will be gone.
You may not have reposted their content or DM’d with them, though, so those clues may not be much help.
The best way to be sure whether you’ve been blocked or the user has deleted their account is to either open a new account or borrow someone else’s phone. When you search for the username in question in the TikTok search bar from a different account, it should appear if your account has been blocked but won’t come up if the user is no longer on the app.
One other possibility to bear in mind: it’s possible that you can’t see the user’s content if they’ve switched their TikTok account from public to private. If their username comes up in a search but you can’t see their posts, you may still be able to view their profile to submit a “follow” request. If so, they’ve simply gone private and haven’t blocked you or left the platform.
Good luck! Hope you haven’t lost a friend!
