Your TikTok Bio: Why It’s So Important

What makes you unique?

Your friends and family might be able to easily identify the characteristics that make you special, but it would be a lot more difficult for strangers to quickly distinguish your important qualities from those of everyone else in their town, state, or country.

Now, imagine how hard it is for people to figure out why they should follow a single TikTok user when there are more than two billion others on the social media platform.

An expertly crafted TikTok bio can make all the difference. Let’s talk about your bio and how to create it.

What Is a Bio on TikTok?

We assume that readers don’t need us to define “bio.” It’s short for the word biography, of course, and it’s a brief summary or history of a person’s life, major accomplishments, and/or interests. Users’ bios live on their TikTok profile pages, right underneath their names, TikTok usernames, and follower counts.

Bios play an oversized role on TikTok accounts. There are few other ways for users to quickly and briefly tell viewers “who they are.”

People can certainly identify users’ interests by watching their TikTok content, but that’s a time-consuming process. The bio is one of the first things visitors see when visiting a profile, so it’s prime real estate where you can immediately convey the information you think distinguishes you from TikTok’s other 2+ billion users.

When we said “briefly” earlier in this section, we weren’t exaggerating. You only have 80 characters (not words, characters — and that includes spaces and emojis!) to use when you create a TikTok bio. It can be challenging to write an effective description that fits the available space and makes a good first impression.

What should go in your bio?

  • Individuals generally highlight the TikTok content niche they focus on, while showing at least a bit of their distinctive personalities.
  • Businesses usually use their bio to spotlight their brands and the factors that make them stand out in a crowded marketplace. A company’s “personality” or mission statement can be showcased here, too.
  • Businesses and content creators with more than 1,000 followers can also include a clickable link to a website or service page in their bio.

Above all, your bio should present a compelling snapshot of what makes you unique and interesting on TikTok. The goal is to make people curious enough to check out your content or become your TikTok follower.

How to Create a TikTok Bio

It couldn’t be easier.

Visit your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen, and hit the “Edit” button next to your name. Click on “Bio,” and you’ll be able to type your bio into the text box. The edit screen is also where you can add other details you want people to see, like your school and pronouns, and it’s where you can enter a link if you qualify to show one.

You’re able to change your bio as often as you’d like, so you’re not stuck with the same identifying information you used when you first signed up for a TikTok account. In fact, it’s smart to revise or rewrite your bio often as you build your TikTok presence and become a more popular creator or even an influencer.

Your TikTok bio can be a valuable asset. Don’t neglect it!
