Can You Block Annoying TikTok Sounds?

2 min read

It can seem that every other TikTok video uses the same trending song. That’s not surprising; songs trend because so many people (including content creators) like them, and because using trending sounds in videos helps bring in TikTok search traffic.

Let’s face it, though. Not every TikTok user likes the songs they hear over and over again as they scroll through their feed, and some of the sounds can get downright annoying after a while.

Unfortunately, TikTok still doesn’t allow you to “mute” a post with one click (people have been asking for that feature for years), there’s no simple way to block a sound from playing when a video containing it appears on your feed, and you can’t prevent content using the song from showing up.

You could turn the volume down on your phone whenever the sound is used, but that’s a pain. You can mute TikTok when it first opens (go to your TikTok profile, open the menu, and then navigate to Settings and privacy > Playback > Open TikTok on mute), but once you unmute your feed, that won’t stop the annoying song from playing.

Here’s the best available strategy.

Avoiding Specific TikTok Sounds

When a TikTok post containing the sound opens, tap and hold your finger on the video until the popup menu appears. Then click “Not interested.”

That option is designed to stop similar content from appearing in your feed, but it often prevents videos using the sound from playing as well. You may have to take the “not interested” route on multiple posts to eliminate the annoying song from your feed completely, but sadly, it’s the only option that TikTok currently offers.

(For reasons that haven’t been explained, the app did once have a “Hide videos with this sound” option when you click “Not interested,” but it was removed a few years ago.)

Using this method may stop you from seeing some videos you’d otherwise be interested in, but at least you’ll be likely to banish the offending song from your feed after tapping “Not interested” on several posts that use it.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery.
