Older generations who were delighted to have a TV set that could bring three or four channels of video programming right into their home probably wouldn’t believe what we can easily do today.
Tech-savvy grandparents might understand cable TV or even the Internet, but It might be tougher for them to grasp everything that modern smartphones can do. Casting from your phone to your TV? That might blow their minds.
Today, most of us take screencasting and mirroring for granted. As long as you have a streaming device or television, it’s just another way to enjoy the wealth of programming available on your phone.
With TikTok now a top-five social media platform worldwide, it would be great if you could easily cast TikTok videos directly to your TV — and in the last few years, that functionality has been added to the app.
How Do You Cast TikTok to a TV?
We do have to start with a bit of bad news: this process won’t work for everyone.
You need to have:
- An Android phone that runs Android 6.0 or later versions, or an iPhone that runs iOS 12.0 or later versions.
- An Internet-connected smart TV (or Chromecast) that’s on the same network as your phone.
These days, most readers probably qualify — so let’s start casting. Here’s how to do it.
- Open the TikTok post that you want to cast to your TV.
- Tap the “Share” icon (a sweeping right arrow) on the right side of the screen.
- Find and click the icon labeled “Cast” or “Cast to TV” in the bottom row of the popup window.
- You’ll see a list of available TVs (or streaming devices) that you can cast to; tap “Refresh” if your TV isn’t on the list. Then choose the desired destination (on iPhones, you may be asked to allow access to your local network) and — poof! — the TikTok video you’re watching on your phone will appear on your TV. To stop casting, just click the casting banner at the bottom of your phone screen.
That’s all there is to it — and if you want to impress those grandparents who still can’t figure out how to open their email, casting a dance video from your phone to your TV will be a cool trick to show off at the next family gathering.
