Can You Change Your TikTok Profile Picture?

3 min read

When you first sign up for a TikTok account, you’ll have the opportunity to set up the profile that tells other TikTok users a little about you. You can also upload a profile picture to let people get an idea of what you look like. If you’d rather, the picture can illustrate something you’re interested in, show a favorite anime character or piece of art — the options are limitless.

If you don’t initially choose a TikTok profile picture, your account will default to a “new user” silhouette until you decide to change it.

Some people like to stay with the generic picture. Perhaps they don’t want to bother dealing with the photo because they don’t think it’s important; more likely, they prefer to remain anonymous on the app.

When the time comes that you want to change the picture to something less generic, or if you don’t like the one you originally chose when you joined TikTok, it’s easy to make the swap.

Here’s how to do it.

Adding or Changing a TikTok Profile Picture

Whether you want to replace the default silhouette with a photo of yourself, change the picture you’ve using, or revert to the silhouette (if you’ve decided you’d rather stay anonymous), the process is essentially the same.

  1. If you have a photo, graphic, or other artwork you want to use in your profile, make sure it’s on your phone’s camera reel so you can upload it. The best photo choice will be square, 200 x 200 pixels, in JPEG or PNG format, with a resolution of at least 72 DPI.
  2. Open your profile screen by tapping on the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
  3. Click on the “Edit profile” button underneath your current photo and follower count.
  4. On the next screen, tap the “Edit photo or avatar” link underneath the photo.
  5. You’ll see a pop-up with four choices:
    – “Create avatar” lets you generate an AI avatar using your photo. Follow the directions and your avatar will be ready to be used in minutes.
    – “Take photo” allows you to take a new picture on your phone to be used in your profile. You can edit it if you choose.
    – “Upload photo” opens thumbnails of the pictures on your phone’s camera reel. Choose the one you want to use and you’re good to go.
    – “View photo” simply shows you the profile picture you’re currently using.
  6. If you’re trying to switch back to the “new user” default picture, search for “TikTok empty profile picture” on the app, download it, and then upload it as described above.

Making the change takes almost no time, allowing you to show a different “face” to other TikTok users whenever you’d like.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery.
