Sort of.
There are actually two types of moderators on TikTok, and one is a “real” job.
- Content moderators are paid $25-50 per hour to scroll through an endless list of TikTok videos and comments, searching for violations of Community Standards and TikTok’s terms and conditions. You have to apply for the job, the competition for positions is stiff, there’s a long training period where you can easily wash out, and the stress level is high.
- TikTok Live moderators usually work for free, and their “job” is essentially maintaining order during Live streams. They block or mute viewers who cause problems, they step in and stop the discussion of sensitive subjects or the use of offensive language, and they answer questions from those attending the session.
No one can “make” you a TikTok content moderator. You have to apply for the position on TikTok’s career page and go through several initial screenings before sitting for a personal interview. As we said, it’s a “real” job and the application process is rigorous.
On the other hand, a friend or acquaintance can give you a job as a TikTok Live moderator. Here’s how it works.
How To Become a TikTok Live Moderator
Some people get jobs because they know someone. They may be hired by a relative or friend, another employee might put in a good word for them with the boss, or they might hear about unadvertised positions from a school or industry network.
Moderating TikTok Live streams pretty much falls into that category. Content creators who run Live sessions choose their own moderators, so it really does help to “know someone.” The vast majority of Live moderators are friends of the stream host or have gotten to know the host by interacting with them extensively on the social media platform.
Most of these moderators do the job because they think it’s fun and they like hanging out with their friend who’s running the stream. A small number do get paid, but not by TikTok. Some very popular influencers pay their moderators a small fee for their time.
In short, the best approach to becoming a TikTok Live moderator is to make lots of popular and important friends on the app and then ask if you can help out in their Live sessions — or to be lucky enough to have a family member or close friend who’s prolific enough on the platform to host Live streams.
Making Someone a Moderator for TikTok Live
If you host TikTok Live sessions and have found someone who you want to moderate the stream, you can assign them the role right from your dashboard.
- Click “Settings” in your TikTok Live chat panel.
- Tap “Moderators” on the next menu. It will be the first option.
- Click on the icon showing a profile and a “+” sign at the top right of the screen.
- Enter the TikTok username (preceded by an @) you want to add as a moderator, and tap “Add.”
You can also add a moderator once the chat starts, by clicking on an attendee’s name and choosing “Add moderator.” That’s all there is to it!
