Changing Your TikTok Username Without Waiting 30 Days

Whether you’ve gotten married and changed your name, you’ve changed the focus of your TikTok account and want your username to reflect the new subject, or you’ve simply gotten tired of your TikTok username and want to switch to a new one, the social media platform lets you easily make the change.

You may have to wait a little while, though.

TikTok’s rules only let you switch usernames once a month. The app says the policy ensures account security and prevents account misuse by fighting spammers, scammers, and those who try to impersonate other users. It’s also said to make database management easier and promote a predictable online atmosphere where people’s names don’t constantly change.

But what if you have a good reason for changing your TikTok username several times during the 30-day “cooldown period?”

You’re in luck. It is possible for most TikTok users to get around the rule, as long as they can access their device settings. There’s a two-step process you must follow; we’ll take them one at a time.

Step 1: Change Your Phone’s Date Setting

The reason this approach works is simple: TikTok doesn’t have a “master clock” to determine when the 30-day restriction is over. Instead, the app checks the date and time on a user’s phone to see if 30 days have passed.

All you have to do is tell TikTok that it’s been 30 days since your last username change; that’s accomplished by changing the date and time on your device to at least 30 days in the future. If it’s 2 pm on April 24, just set your phone settings to make it May 25 (31 days in the future). That bypasses the cooldown period and allows you to choose a new TikTok username.

On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > Date & Time, turn off the “Set Automatically” option, and enter the new date. On Android phones, go to Settings > System (or General management) > Date and Time. Disable the automatic option, tap “Date,” and enter the new date.

Now, for that new username.

Step 2: Change Your TikTok Username

You’ve already done the hard part.

  1. Open your TikTok profile page by tapping the “Profile” icon on your home screen.
  2. Find and click the “Edit profile” (or just “Edit”) link near your profile photo.
  3. Select “Username” on the next menu, and you should see a green checkmark next to the field where your TikTok username appears. That checkmark means you can make the desired change.

Bear in mind that if you change the name you’ve been using, it goes “on hold” for a while before you can reclaim it— and someone else may have already grabbed it before you do. Be sure you won’t mind losing the old username forever before deciding to switch to a new one.
