Most social media platforms have “Stories” features. Snapchat started the trend in 2013, and the format became huge on Instagram when Stories were introduced there in 2016. Other apps, including TikTok, have since added Story functionality, providing users with a different way to create short and compelling content.
Stories work essentially the same way everywhere; only a few of the details vary. TikTok Stories can be 15 seconds or less, they live on the platform for only 24 hours before they disappear, they can be either videos or photos (although they’re almost always TikTok videos), and they live in a separate area of the app, not on regular feeds.
The audience for TikTok Stories can also be restricted. Content creators can choose to have them visible just to their followers or friends, or can make them available to everyone.
Because “regular” TikTok content is so popular, and because the only way to find and watch Stories is to tap on a person’s profile picture surrounded by a blue circle, the Stories format was slow to catch on.
TikTok Stories are now entering the mainstream, though, because the app makes it easy to record simple TikTok videos as Stories in just seconds. Many TikTok users use the format to provide followers with brief updates, show behind-the-scenes activity, promote new videos, or offer exclusive promotions.
Sound interesting? Here’s how to do it.
Entering Story Mode on TikTok
The process of recording a Story starts the same way as it does for creating any other video.
- Tap the “+” icon at the bottom of your home screen.
- From the menu above the red “Record” button, choose “15s” as the maximum length of your Story.
- Hit the Record button to shoot your Story. When done, tap the red checkmark.
- You’ll see a preview of the Story; if you’re satisfied, click “Your Story” at the bottom of the page.
You’re done. The video has been added to your Story timeline and will stay there for the next 24 hours. You can add another one at any time, so don’t be shy!
