GRWM: A TikTok Acronym You Can Explain To Your Kids

It’s a common problem for parents in the 2020s.

Your kids come to you and ask you to explain the meaning of an acronym, abbreviation, or term they heard in a TikTok video (or one that they heard from their friends, in the case of children who are too young to have a TikTok account).

Sexually-related or explicit phrases and acronyms like “hawk tuah,” “corn,” and “WAP” were first popularized on social media platforms like TikTok, but have become ingrained in modern slang. Whether kids have come across the terms in a TikTok post or conversations with others, it can be embarrassing to have them come to you asking for a definition.

“GRWM” is another acronym that’s commonly seen on the app, but it’s thankfully an easy one to discuss with kids of any age.

What GRWM Means on TikTok

Fashion videos have always been some of the most popular TikTok content available on the platform. Many influencers and popular content creators have built their importance by catering to TikTok users interested in the latest styles and fashions, and videos focused on the topics can generate large incomes for their creators.

Fashion posts often seen trending on the app feature GRWM videos. GRWM stands for “Get Ready With Me,” and the nature of the content is what you’d probably expect. The TikTok user is supposedly preparing for a social event, a trip, a night on the town, or some other occasion, and they record their preparations under the guise of telling viewers to “get ready” with them.

In most cases, the creators are showing off the hot merch they scored while shopping and/or demonstrating their personal style. They may showcase specific types of outfits and accessories, their personal makeup or hair styling routines, or anything else they do when “getting ready” to go out (or perhaps stay in with a special someone).

These videos aren’t just popular with TikTok viewers; many brands have partnered with fashion influencers to feature their products in GRWM content as well. For those influencers and other popular creators, it’s the best of both worlds: they build large TikTok fan bases while earning significant revenue from their GRWM video productions.
