How Much Is 1000 Coins On TikTok?

3 min read

You might think that a TikTok coin would be worth a US penny, or one pence in the UK. That’s a fairly close approximation, but a 1:1 ratio would make things much too easy.

TikTok coins are part of the social media platform’s proprietary exchange system, so they’re not pegged to dollars, pounds, or any other country’s currency. Determining their equivalence is made even more difficult by the fact that you purchase TikTok coins in packages — and you may get a discount for buying large packets of coins or making the purchase in some nations.

Let’s explore.

What are TikTok Coins, and What Are They Used For?

TikTok coins are virtual currency used only in the app, and they let TikTok users purchase gifts (or tips) to be given to content creators. They’re used much less often to promote content on the app.

When you buy coins they accumulate in your TikTok account balance, viewable by visiting your profile page, opening the menu by tapping the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner, and choosing “Balance” from the pop-up window.

TikTok users can’t simply give coins to creators; there’s a whole exchange system (which earns the platform enormous profits). Viewers in a TikTok Live session can show their appreciation for the host’s work by giving them virtual gifts — and those gifts are purchased with TikTok coins.

There are hundreds of gifts that users can choose from. Several cost just one coin, while extremely valuable gifts can be purchased for hundreds of coins; the most expensive (a TikTok Universe) currently costs 44,999 TikTok coins.

Creators don’t get all of that money, though. The gifts they receive are converted into virtual “diamonds” that can be redeemed for cash, and TikTok takes a commission that averages a whopping 50% for the transaction.

In short, a content creator will only receive about half of the money you spend on their gifts.

Where Do You Buy TikTok Coins?

There are two standard ways to purchase coins in the TikTok app. One is visiting the “Balance” section of your TikTok profile (directions for finding it are mentioned above). You can also purchase coins right in the Live stream you’re attending, as long as the stream’s creator is eligible to receive gifts (they have to meet age and popularity requirements).

(If you already have a balance, choose the “recharge” option.)

There’s more to the story, though. Buying coins in the app is more expensive than purchasing them on TikTok’s website; they say that’s because they have to pay commissions to the App Store and Google Play for the transactions. You can save 25-30% by buying TikTok coins online.

The coins are also cheaper in countries like the Philippines and Brazil, potentially advantageous for people who use a VPN.

What Are TikTok Coins Worth?

The last section explains one reason why it’s impossible to say exactly how much the coins are worth; they’re worth more if you purchase them online or in some other countries.

There are more reasons, too. Individual coins have more value if you buy them in larger packages (because there’s a discount for bulk purchases), and the value of coins can change from day to day because of currency fluctuations.

Generally speaking, though, one TikTok coin is worth approximately 1.4 US cents (or 0.8 pence in the UK) as of this writing. Because you can only purchase the coins in larger packages, the average cost of 1,000 TikTok coins is $12.99 (or a little over £10).

That’s not worth 1,000 coins is worth to the TikTok creators receiving gifts, however. They’ll only get about $6.50 (or £5) once the platform has taken its share.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery.
