A “voiceover” is a common production technique used in movies, TV, radio — and these days, in social media content. It’s essentially narration that’s inserted “on top” of video footage (or a series of photos).
Most news shows, commercials, and documentaries make extensive use of voiceovers, and animated movies or shows use voiceovers (although that’s usually described as voice acting) to insert human voices over the actions of the cartoon characters.
You can easily add voiceovers to your TikTok videos, too.
Why Would You Use Voiceovers on TikTok Content?
Adding voiceovers (abbreviated as v/o) to your TikTok productions can take them to a new level. Here are several reasons to use them.
- TikTok users who are camera-shy may find it easier to create videos when they don’t have to appear on-screen.
- A v/o can add important context to video shot remotely, adding narration or an important explanation of what viewers are seeing.
- Voiceovers allow creators to provide more detailed and coherent instructions in DIY videos and tutorials.
- Adding a voiceover changes the style and pacing of a production, makes it look more professional, and lets the creator add interesting or humorous details during the flow of a video.
How Do You Add a Voiceover to Your TikTok Video?
Don’t be intimidated; it’s simple to add a v/o track to your TikTok content right in the app. Here’s how to do it.
- Create a post in TikTok the way you normally would, by tapping the “Plus” button at the bottom of your home screen and recording your video.
- When you’re satisfied, hit the “Edit” icon (a screen with tiny arrows on either side) near the top of the right-hand menu to proceed to the editing screen.
- Scroll the video timeline to the part of your video where you want to insert your voiceover, tap the “Sound” icon on the bottom menu, and then select “Voiceover.”
- Start recording your narration by hitting the red “Record” button, and hit the button again when you’re finished recording.
- Decide whether to retain the video’s original audio track in the background or remove it by clicking or unclicking “Keep original sound.” To adjust the volume of each track, go to Edit > Volume.
- Hit “Done” and you’ve added your voiceover!
