How To Edit Captions On TikTok

2 min read

You’ve created a terrific TikTok video, done all the edits that make it look professionally-produced, added your description and hashtags, and uploaded it to the social media platform.

And then you realize. You forgot the caption, or you screwed up the caption, or you thought of a different caption that you’re sure would grab a lot more attention and double your TikTok post’s viewership.

What now?

Until recently, you were out of luck. Unless you had saved a previous draft or kept a copy on your device, you’d first have to download the video to your phone, delete the original post, and create a brand-new version of it with the “right caption.”

In 2024, though, things became a lot easier. TikTok has revised the way the system operates, and you’re now able to edit your caption — within reason.

Let’s explain.

Editing the Caption on Your TikTok Video

Let’s be clear. We’re not talking about changing the text that you may have overlayed onto your video when you produced and saved it to the app. The ability to edit is limited to the caption you add to the post containing your finished video.

Here’s how to do it.

  1. Click the “Profile” icon on the bottom right of the home screen.
  2. Once you’ve opened your TikTok profile, find the video thumbnail for the video you want to edit. Tap it to view the video full-screen.
  3. Click the “Menu” icon (a bubble with three dots) on the right side of your video.
  4. Scroll the bottom level of grey icons on the popup that appears, and click “Edit post.”
  5. That will let you change the caption, description, and everything else you’ve added to your post (like hashtags and tags).
  6. When you’re done, click “Save” and your posted video will now show the corrected caption.

Don’t wait too long, though. You’re only allowed to edit your post for seven days after you’ve uploaded it, and you can only edit once per day.

Carpenters often say “measure twice, cut once.” To be safe when editing a TikTok post, plan twice, edit once. Depending on how long ago you first created the video, you may not get another chance.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery. In short, “spicy TikTok” isn’t what you might think it is. Those who grew up in the early days of cable TV or when “men’s magazines” were popular wouldn’t immediately guess […]
