How To Turn Off Reposts On TikTok

When you want to grow your TikTok presence, one of the app’s greatest features is the repost function. How great is it? Just think about the TikTok challenges you’ve seen go viral; they all trended because so many people reposted them to their follower bases.

You never know when a TikTok video you create is going to strike a chord with other users, so allowing everyone to repost the video increases the chances that people who don’t know you will see your post, love it, repost it, and decide to follow you. Your popularity can grow geometrically if everything goes right.

It’s not always the right choice to allow TikTok users to repost your content, however. Some videos might show personal moments with family members that you’ve only uploaded for your relatives to see. Others might contain copyrighted material that you own, not meant for widespread sharing across the app where others might steal your ideas or content.

Is there a way to prevent others from reposting your videos? Yes, but you might not be able to use it.

Turning Off TikTok Reposts

The best solution, unfortunately, isn’t available to all users. It’s the first alternative to try, though.

  1. Visit your TikTok profile by hitting the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
  2. Tap the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the top right of the profile screen.
  3. Click “Settings and privacy” from the pop-up, and then click “Privacy.”
  4. Scroll through the list of options to find “Repost.” If you see it, move the toggle switch to the right to turn off reposts.

If you don’t have a “Repost” option, here’s what else you can do to limit the possibility that your video will be reposted on the social media platform.

  • Make your account private. You have to approve requests from users who want to see your videos, and you can tell each one you approve not to repost what they see.
  • When you record a video that you don’t want reposted, set its Privacy settings to “Friends” before posting. Only your mutual followers will be able to see the content, limiting the number of people who can repost it. (It’s a good idea to include “DON’T REPOST!” in your caption.)

This last resort won’t prevent reposts. But if you disable downloads for your videos (that’s done from the “Downloads” option on the “Privacy” screen mentioned earlier), you can at least stop anyone who sees the post or a repost from saving it and sharing it elsewhere.
