How To Turn On Dark Mode On TikTok

3 min read

The phrase “dark mode” may sound ominous, but it’s just the opposite on TikTok. Turning on dark mode simply makes the screen easier on the eyes, especially in low-light environments.

Dark mode replaces the display’s normal white background with a dark one and changes text from black to a much lighter color, without changing the appearance of videos. This darker display can reduce glare and eye strain, while making text easier to read in low-light environments. Dark mode can be particularly helpful for TikTok users surfing their TikTok feeds in bed.

There’s one catch, though. Dark mode was originally designed only for users on iOS phones (like iPhones). You have to jump through a few hoops to do it on an Android device.

Turning on Dark Mode on Your iOS Device

With just four steps, you’ll be in dark mode on TikTok.

  1. Go to your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
  2. Open the menu by clicking the icon with three horizontal lines at the top right of the profile screen.
  3. Select “Settings and privacy” and then tap “Display.”
  4. Choose “Light” or “Dark” to set the mode you want to use. You can change it as often as you’d like.

An additional option is to match your dark mode display to the rest of your settings like screen brightness; just toggle “Use device settings” to “on.” Try it and see if you like it better that way!

Turning on Dark Mode on Android Devices

This is a bit of a hack, but it works just fine with most phones. It does require a little extra work, though, since you’ll have to override the device’s normal settings.

  1. Open the “Settings” menu on your phone and find the “Accessibility” menu. It’s usually listed under “System” or “Device.”
  2. Enable the “dark theme” setting; it may be called something a little different.
  3. Return to “Settings” and scroll down to find “About this device” or something similar.
  4. Click on that link and keep tapping on “Build version” or “Build number” until you’re told that you’ve unlocked the phone’s developer options.
  5. Return to “Settings” again and find the “Developer options” link that you’ve unlocked.
  6. After tapping that link, look for something like “Force dark mode” or “Night mode,” and toggle it to “on.”

That should do the trick. It will put all of your apps into dark mode, however, so you’ll have to turn it off in “Developer options” if you want to return to a normal-looking screen. Also be aware that while this hack works for most Android phones, there’s no guarantee it will work for yours.

One last hint: if you’re using TikTok on your computer, just tap your profile picture at the top of your screen and you should see an option to enter dark mode.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery.
