Upgrading to the latest version of TikTok on your iPhone or Android device is usually simple, and most people can do it quickly and easily. If you run into problems, though, knowing what to do next can save you a lot of time and effort.
Let’s talk about both subjects.
How to Update Your TikTok App
Some people won’t even need to read this section. If you have TikTok (or all apps) set to update automatically on your phone, you almost certainly have the latest version and won’t have to find it and install it manually.
If you see people talking about a cool new feature on the social media platform, though, it’s possible that the automatic update didn’t run as scheduled (or that it’s not available in your region yet).
To ensure you’re running the newest version of TikTok, take these simple steps.
iPhone and other iOS Devices
- Go to your device’s home screen and open the App Store.
- Tap on your profile icon, located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
- Scroll down the list of apps until you see TikTok. If you don’t have the latest update, there will be an “Update” button showing; click it and the new version will be installed. If there’s only an “Open” button, you’re up to date.
Android Devices
- Go to your device’s home screen and open the Google Play Store.
- Type TikTok into the search bar.
- Look for the TikTok result (it should be on top). If you don’t have the latest update, there will be an “Update” button showing; click it and the new version will be installed. If there’s no “Update” button, you already have the latest version.
Reasons Why You Can’t Update TikTok
We all know the feeling of seeing the “spinning wheel” that never stops when you’re trying to do something on your phone or computer, and the equally frustrating feeling of seeing an error message pop up. If you run into either problem when trying to update TikTok, here’s what might be happening.
- You might not have a sufficient Internet connection: Try a different network, use your mobile data, or move closer to the router, if possible.
- You might not have enough storage space: Check to see how much is available, and delete something to create enough space if necessary.
- Your phone’s operating system may be outdated: Some new app versions may not be compatible with your OS; update it and try the TikTok update again.
- Your phone might be having issues: Try rebooting your Internet connection, clearing the TikTok cache (from your profile screen, go to “Settings and privacy” > “Cache and Cellular” > “Free up Space,” and tap “Clear” next to “Cache”), or rebooting your device.
Be patient, and before you know it, you’ll be surfing the latest, greatest version of TikTok and will have forgotten all about the brief glitch.
