We now live in an Internet-dependent world, and we’ve all become accustomed to apps responding immediately to our commands. When you want to pay a bill, text a friend, or get directions, it’s done in seconds.
That can make it incredibly frustrating when a social media platform doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to. When you log into your TikTok account, a feed full of great TikTok videos is ready for you. Just tap an icon or two and you can like a TikTok post or see all the posts that you’ve saved.
When you hit the “Share” icon to repost a video but don’t see the option on the pop-up window, though, what went wrong?
It could just be a momentary glitch with TikTok’s servers or your connection. Wait a minute or two, or move your phone to a different spot in the room, and you may be able to repost without any difficulty.
Still no luck? An inability to repost on TikTok could have several other causes.
Why TikTok’s “Repost” Feature May Not Work
Unfortunately, most of the issues preventing you from reposting on TikTok, can’t be overcome. A few can, though; here’s a look at what may be behind the problem and whether you can do anything about it.
Some Posts Can’t Be Reposted
You’re only allowed to repost a video that you see in your For You feed or ones that are in your likes or watch history. Reposting isn’t available if the video is in your Following tab, in someone else’s TikTok profile, or in your DMs. You also can’t repost a video you’ve already uploaded.
Some TikTok User’s Posts Can’t Be Reposted
The platform lets content creators prohibit reposts of one or all of their videos. If someone has blocked reposting, you’re out of luck. It’s also not possible to repost a post from an account set to “private” unless you first get the creator’s permission.
Reposting Isn’t Available to All Users
Like all TikTok features, reposting was rolled out gradually to different areas of the world. If you try the other fixes we suggest and still have no luck, you may have to wait until you’re able to download a TikTok version that lets you repost.
Your Account Has Been Restricted or Penalized
Accounts in restricted mode have generally been created by parents and won’t have a repost option; if you’ve chosen the account setting yourself, you’ll have to remove it before you can repost.
When an account isn’t in good standing because of penalties, though, you won’t be able to repost until TikTok gives the OK. You should see the details of any penalties (and how to appeal them) in a message the system sent to your inbox.
You May Need to Upgrade
Earlier versions of the TikTok app didn’t include the repost feature. Make sure you’re using the latest version, and if you’re not, download it from the App Store (for iOS devices) or Google Play (for Android devices).
Check the Tech
We’ve already mentioned possible connection difficulties, which are a common issue when TikTok doesn’t work right. If moving to a different spot doesn’t help, try connecting to a different network.
A friend sitting next to you who’s connected to the same network can repost just fine? It might be that your app or phone is locked up or out of storage space; try logging out and back into TikTok, restarting your phone, or clearing your TikTok and phone caches. In a worst-case scenario, delete TikTok and install the latest version.
That’s the deal. By now, either you’re all set to repost — or you understand the reasons why you can’t share the video you loved with your followers.
