The people who sign up for a TikTok account (or join another social media platform) just to share personal content with friends and family? They’re the fortunate ones.
They probably won’t become well-known influencers or be able to monetize their accounts, but that’s fine. It’s not why they’re on the app.
Here’s why they’re lucky: they won’t suffer from “creative block,” an inability to come up with new ideas for their latest TikTok video. They just record whatever’s going on in their lives, upload it, and their TikTok followers will be happy.
Content creators who have “bigger” things in mind, however, need a constant flow of new concepts if they’re going to attract lots of viewers and turn them into TikTok fans. Experiencing creative block (a video producer’s version of writer’s block) can derail their organic growth and their dreams of TikTok fame.
If you’re one of those creators who’s “stuck,” we have a few suggestions you might want to consider to get you through the tough period and back on track. First, though, let’s talk about the reason so many social media producers run into problems coming up with ideas for their TikTok content.
What Is Your Account About?
TikTok influencers and popular content creators all have something important in common. All (or almost all of their videos) focus on a single topic.
Don’t get us wrong. If you shoot a cool makeup tutorial, then upload a great dance video to your account, and follow that up with footage of something funny that your pet has done, one of those posts might become quite popular. However, a widely diverse lineup of content isn’t going to inspire many casual viewers to say, “I’ve got to follow this person!”
Surfers, by and large, become fans of creators who produce videos that center on the same subjects that interest them. If you post nothing but great makeup vids, or dance vids, or funny pet vids, your content will strike a chord with like-minded TikTok users who come across your content. You’re unlikely to find lots of people who are into all three types of videos.
Your chosen subject (often called a “niche”) doesn’t have to be makeup, or dances, or pets, or any other wildly-popular topic. There are more than two billion TikTok users; there are plenty of potential followers who will become devoted fans no matter what niche your content is in.
And if you choose a topic that you’re knowledgeable about and deeply interested in, there’s much less of a chance that you’ll have trouble coming up with ideas for your productions. The biggest issue will probably be coming up with ways to vary your video approaches so your videos don’t all look the same.
Still feeling stuck? Want to stay the course and create a diverse collection of content? Trying to decide on a niche for your account? Here are some ideas to consider.
What Should I Post on TikTok?
You’ll often notice that many of the topics on this list are trending on TikTok. That’s not the primary reason we’re suggesting them, though; it’s extremely difficult to become popular or attract a large audience simply by choosing a trending topic.
But checking out these popular TikTok niches can make it easier to come up with ideas for your own posts. You’ll see so many great examples in these categories that your creative juices will start flowing once you watch a few videos. Remember, however: your personality and individual approach are what will make your content stand out.
- Dance: This probably won’t be your chosen niche, but if you do a great job making a video for a dance challenge, you can attract a lot of eyeballs to your TikTok profile.
- Pranks: A great prank video may go viral, but creating popular follow-ups after that can be difficult. These vids are quite elaborate to plan and execute, but they may expand your horizons and give you good ideas.
- Home Repair and DIY: Those who are handy around the house (or knowledgeable about anything else) find they can build large and appreciative audiences with tutorials.
- Fashion: There’s an endless fascination with the latest trends, and videos ranging from unboxings, style tips, and tips for matching outfits are always inspiring.
- Fitness: You may get some terrific ideas by seeing how fitness influencers manage to take the same basic workout routines and turn them into popular and unique videos.
- Nature and Photography: These types of niches are sure to draw out your creative side and give you a new perspective on how to present compelling TikTok content.
- Entertainment: Watching some of these videos may help you loosen up and attract viewers by focusing on your hidden talent, whether it’s comedy, singing (or lip-syncing), or storytelling.
- Beauty: Many topics lend themselves to product reviews and tips; the wealth of content on this topic can provide pointers on how to adapt their production techniques to your niche.
- Cooking: This is another subject that’s immensely popular on TikTok, and it can get you thinking about creating demonstrations centering around your favorite topic.
Those should get you started. By taking a look at the many approaches that popular content creators and influencers take to put their own spin on saturated (or oversaturated) videos in niches like these, you can start thinking about new ways to present and differentiate the content you post to your TikTok profile.
Above all, don’t be intimidated. Whether you’re creating videos about restoring vintage cars, collecting hockey cards, television ratings battles, or Grandma’s tips for baby care, lots of viewers are out there looking for the high-quality content you’ll be producing.
If you’re experiencing creative block, you’re not alone; it’s a common problem for creators. Just take advantage of the 1+million new videos uploaded to TikTok every hour, and go looking for inspiration. You’re sure to find it!
