TikTok’s filters and effects are two of the most popular features available to content creators on the social media platform. The terms are often confused by TikTok users, though.
The two are used for very different purposes. Most filters make subtle changes to a TikTok video’s aesthetic appearance, while effects provide more dramatic changes and additions to TikTok content, many of them giving posts a memorable and fun look.
The app makes hundreds of filters and effects available. New ones are added constantly, while others may temporarily or permanently disappear from the lineup. That can make it difficult for users who want a very specific aesthetic or look to find the tool they need to produce it.
In fact, it’s not uncommon for people to go searching for a particular TikTok effect (or filter) and be unable to find it.
Here’s the secret they need to know.
How To Search for Effects on TikTok
In this article, we’re focusing on the process that lets you find the striking effects you can add to a TikTok post. If your goal is to locate the proper low-key filter to use in your production, the process is essentially the same. We’ll identify the small differences in our step-by-step rundown.
- Open the “Create” screen in your app by tapping the “+” icon at the bottom of your home screen.
- Click on the “Effects” icon, which is just to the left of the red “Record” button. (If you’re searching for a filter, click the “Filter” icon (three circles) in the right-hand menu instead.)
- Hit the “View all effects” button at the bottom of the Effects popup. (If you’re looking for a filter, skip this step.)
- To browse available effects, you can scroll through the categories at the top of the popup window and try each of the options available in each category. If you’re looking for a specific effect, though, tap the “Search” icon (a magnifying glass) in the popup menu and enter the effect name, a keyword, or a description in the search bar. Then choose the effect you want to use from the search results. (If you’re searching for a filter, there’s no search option in the popup. You can only browse the options visible in the window, unless you want to try the search from your home screen.)
Once you’ve chosen an effect or filter, you can preview it to decide if it provides the look you’re after. If you’re happy with it, close the popup window and produce your video; otherwise, keep searching to find the perfect effect. You can also save the one you’ve chosen to your TikTok profile for later use by tapping “Save.”
It’s been proven that using features like effects and filters vastly increases views and improves key metrics like watch time for TikTok videos. Give it a try!
