In this era of secure, randomly-generated passwords, and platforms that require regular password changes, most people are accustomed to using the autofill function on their phone or browser. It’s convenient, but it’s not failproof.
So, what happens if you don’t use autofill or it doesn’t work, and you’ve lost your TikTok password?
We’re sorry to break the news, but you can’t look in your TikTok settings to find it.
Like almost every social media platform, the app has established pretty rigorous protections for TikTok users’ personal information. You can’t just supply your email address or phone number to confirm your identity and view your password, like you can on some less-secure websites.
That can cause a real problem if you’ve changed or updated your phone or browser, you haven’t enabled the proper “save passwords” settings, or you run into a different technical issue — and you can’t remember your password. You’ll be locked out of TikTok until you find a workaround or ask the system to change your login credentials.
Don’t panic. We’ve got you covered.
Dealing With a Lost TikTok Password
TikTok won’t show you your password on the app; they’ll make you jump through hoops to get a new one instead. Try this much easier method first.
Check Saved Passwords on Your Phone or Browser
Even if your device or computer isn’t automatically entering your TikTok username and password when you want to log onto the platform, that doesn’t mean the credentials aren’t saved in your phone or browser. Let’s look there.
- On iPhones or iPads: Open “Settings” on your phone, and then choose “Passwords” (the location might be “Passwords & Accounts” on older devices). Enter your passcode, or use Face or Touch ID, and you’ll have access to all of the passwords you’ve saved.
- On Android Devices: Saved passwords can be found in the Google Password Manager. Go to “Settings” > “Passwords and Accounts” to find it on your phone or tablet; if you have the Chrome browser installed, you can also use the next step.
- On Chrome Browsers: Open your Profile and select “Passwords.” If you have an older browser version, tap the three-vertical-dot icon and go to “Passwords and autofill” > “Google Password Manager.”
- On Firefox Browsers: Click the “Menu” icon (three horizontal lines), and choose “Logins and Passwords.”
- On Safari Browsers: Go to “Safari” > “Preferences” > “Passwords.” Use your Mac password or Touch ID to gain access to the list.
- On Edge Browsers: Go to “Settings and more” > “Settings” > “Profiles” > “Passwords.”
(If you’ve enabled 2-step verification or another security measure, you may have to complete that process before you can see the saved passwords.)
Before breathing a sigh of relief, make sure your device or browser has the “autofill” option enabled so you don’t have to go through this again.
Still no luck?
Reset Your Password
Don’t waste your time hunting through TikTok’s settings trying to find your password. It’s not there. If you haven’t found it elsewhere, you’ll have to do a password reset.
- If You’re Still Logged into TikTok: visit your TikTok profile, tap the “Menu” icon (three horizontal lines at the top), and choose “Settings and privacy” from the popup. Click on “Account,” then select “Password,” and finally, tap the “Help” (question mark) at the top right. Choose “Forgot password” and follow the instructions from there. You’ll be able to choose a new password.
- If You Can’t Log into TikTok: Open the login screen, click “Sign up,” and then “Log in.” Choose “Use phone/email/username,” then “Email / Username,” and finally, tap “Forgot password?” Follow the prompts to receive a confirmation code (via your phone or email) that lets you set a new TikTok password.
If all of this was a pain (and it almost certainly was), let the experience serve as a reminder to make sure your phone or browser is set to save and autofill all of your login credentials — and don’t forget to enable all protection methods that are available. No one wants to go through this hassle regularly.
