When you sign up for an account on a social media platform, you want to be entertained and not annoyed.
However, it can seem like TikTok has a mind of its own. You’re constantly being pinged when someone interacts with your account or posts something new. You open the app, and the first video starts blaring loud enough that it wakes up the next-door neighbors. Someone you follow creates so many TikTok posts that they’re overrunning your feed.
It’s time to take control of your TikTok account. You can easily mute all of those annoyances, making your time on the app (and even off the app, in the case of phone notifications) a pleasure and not an ordeal.
Let’s learn how.
Muting Your TikTok Notifications
It’s difficult to go about your day-to-day life if your phone is constantly chiming because of TikTok push notifications, and the constant delivery of in-app notifications can ruin your browsing or TikTok Live sessions.
Here’s how to mute those irritating interruptions.
- Go to your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
- Open the profile menu by clicking the “Menu” icon (three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Choose “Settings and privacy” from the pop-up menu, and then select “Notifications.”
- Under the “Interactions” header, you’ll see a long list of push notifications that are sent to your phone whenever someone interacts with your account. You can either toggle them all off (to the left) to stop all notifications on your phone, or decide which you’d still like to receive.
- Now, tap “In-app notifications.”
- You’ll see a big list of default notifications that appear while you’re on the app. Toggle all of them to “off” if you want to eliminate all interruptions, or pick and choose if there are some you still want to receive.
You’re now able to enjoy TikTok on your own terms.
Muting Sound on TikTok Videos
You have two options to prevent TikTok content from blowing your ears off when you open the app. You’ll find them in the same place.
- Go to your TikTok profile and open the menu.
- Tap “Settings and privacy.”
- Scroll down the screen and select “Playback.”
- By toggling the “Open TikTok on mute” setting to “off,” you can ensure that the first video on your feed will be muted when you open TikTok. (Subsequent vids will play at normal volume.)
- If you simply don’t want the audio to be too loud when you open the app, you can leave the first option “on” and make sure the second one, “Auto volume adjustment,” is set to on.
- This has nothing to do with notifications, but while you’re on this screen, you might also want to set the third option to “on” as well. That guarantees that the screen rotates 90° when a video on your feed was recorded horizontally instead of vertically.
Muting Someone’s Posts on TikTok
If you’ve gotten tired of a friend’s posts dominating your TikTok feed but don’t want to unfollow them, it’s easy to solve the problem.
- Press and hold your finger on one of their videos until a pop-up window opens.
- Tap the “Mute their posts” icon. You won’t see content from the person until you reverse the action.
Don’t hesitate to take any of these steps to improve your TikTok experience. After all, it’s your account — you should enjoy it!
