My TikTok Account Is Linked To Instagram — Can I Unlink It?

When you first signed up for a TikTok account, you were given the opportunity to link your TikTok presence to your Instagram account. If you’re like most people, you probably said yes — or you decided to link the two accounts once you’d spent some time on TikTok. After all, there are a lot of good reasons to be connected on the two social media platforms.

  • It’s easier for you and your Instagram friends to find each other on TikTok.
  • You can easily cross-post content between the two apps without having to create separate IG and TikTok videos.
  • That cross-promotion lets you build reach and visibility, since not all of your TikTok followers are on Insta and vice versa. The larger audiences that result lead to greater engagement and larger follower counts on both platforms.
  • With the political uncertainty surrounding TikTok, it’s smart to build a presence on both platforms and diversify your online presence.

Some TikTok users, though, eventually decide that the disadvantages of linked accounts outweigh the advantages.

  • Privacy concerns are always front-of-mind for some people who realize that a larger number of people have access to their personal information, or that a hack of one account might put the other at risk.
  • The different audience demographics of the two apps may not make cross-posting as effective as it might have first appeared to be.
  • The aesthetic differences between TikTok and Instagram may call for different graphic or branding approaches.
  • Changes to content strategy or goals for one or both of the accounts might make it smarter to break their connection.

Whatever the reason, it’s fast and easy to unlink your TikTok and Instagram accounts, and it won’t remove any of your content or browsing history from either platform.

How To Unlink Instagram from TikTok

Don’t worry. If you change your mind later, you can link the two accounts together again with no problem.

  1. Visit your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
  2. Find and click the “Edit profile” button on your profile. It’s in the middle of the screen, right underneath your “following” and “follower” counts. (Don’t click on the Instagram icon next to the button; that will take you to your IG profile, which won’t help.)
  3. On the next screen, look down the menu to find the “Instagram” link. Tap on it, then click “Unlink” and “Confirm.”

You’re done. Your IG and TikTok presences are separate once again.

We told you it was easy!
