A TikTok post really struck a chord with you. Whether your reaction was positive or negative, you felt compelled to contribute your two cents. You hit the “Comment” icon on the video, ready to unleash the perfect response — and you see an error message. You’re not allowed to comment.
What’s going on?
There are several reasons why you might not be able to comment on TikTok content. Let’s examine them one by one.
1. Oops!
You may not be logged into your TikTok account. You’re not allowed to leave comments unless you’re an active user on the social media platform.
2. A Poor Connection, an App Problem, or a Glitch
The system occasionally experiences brief technical issues that interrupt some functions for TikTok users. If the issue is a tech glitch, it will be resolved quickly and you’ll be able to leave your comment.
Apps can glitch and prevent proper operations, too. You may need to log out and back into TikTok or restart your phone if your app has locked up. It’s also possible that you don’t have the latest app updates or your app is outdated; make sure all recent updates have been installed and you have the latest version.
The app’s functioning can also be unpredictable if you have a poor Internet connection. Check to be sure you have a strong Wi-Fi connection, try a different network, or switch to mobile data instead.
3. Comments are Disabled
We’re now moving on to more likely reasons that you’re not being allowed to comment on a post.
TikTok content creators can turn off comments for the videos they upload, and they can also prohibit comments that include specific words or phrases. If others have left comments, try rewording your comment (eliminating possibly objectionable words); if the comment section is empty, the user has probably disabled all comments.
4. You Don’t Follow the Poster
Users can limit comments on their videos to users who follow them or to friends (mutual followers, each of whom follows the other). You might have to follow the creator before you can add your perspective.
5. You’re Blocked or Muted
If the poster has muted you, you can view their videos and Live sessions but can’t comment. If the user has blocked you, you shouldn’t be able to see their content, but you definitely can’t leave a comment on it.
6. Slow Down!
TikTok prevents people from commenting too rapidly or taking other actions on the app too quickly, as part of the platform’s effort to cut down on spam activities. Wait a few minutes and try leaving your comment later.
7. Oops, Again!
If you’ve violated TikTok’s terms and conditions or Community Standards, you may be shadowbanned or penalized and unable to use some of the app’s functions (like commenting) for a short time. All you can do is remember your comment and wait it out!
