When you come across a terrific TikTok post that you want to save, you might be able to download it right to your phone or device. It depends on whether the content creator has allowed or disabled downloads.
When most people produce a new video and upload it to the social media platform, a copy is automatically saved to the camera reel on their phone.
Both “save video” functions are managed the same way, with the same control in your TikTok settings. This feature is disabled for TikTok users under the age of 16, but everyone else can decide whether to let other users save the videos they produce and whether they want their own videos saved on their phone.
Where is this control, you ask?
How to Turn Off “Save Video” on TikTok
Start by opening your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen. From there:
- Click on the “Menu” icon (three horizontal lines at the top right of your profile screen.
- Choose “Settings and privacy” from the popup menu.
- Click on “Privacy.”
- Scroll down to find and choose the “Downloads” link.
- You’ll see a toggle switch on the next page. Move it to the left to turn downloads off.
This will prevent all viewers from being able to save your TikTok content (although they can still bookmark it for later viewing if they want). Remember, though, it will also stop the videos you produce from being automatically downloaded to your phone. You’ll have to individually save any of your posts that you want to keep for posterity.
Choose carefully!
