It’s an annoyance most of us face every day. You wake up, check your emails — and the vast majority are spam, notifications, or other messages you have no desire to read.
“Unsubscribing” from a long list of spam emails is time-consuming, which is why it’s usually easier just to mark them as spam, watch them disappear, and continue with your day. When there are multiple messages from the same sender, though, it makes sense to figure out how to stop the offenders from bombarding your inbox.
Many of the messages you receive are probably from TikTok, because the social media platform regularly sends out notifications about likes or comments you’ve received for your TikTok videos, or about new DMs or notices in your Inbox. The app also sends out marketing emails from time to time.
If you want to Marie Condo (the influencer who specializes in decluttering, and whose name is often used as a verb) your email account, it makes sense to stop both types of TikTok communications. It takes only a couple of minutes, and you can do it while still allowing verification emails from the app.
How to Stop Getting Notification Emails from TikTok
This is done right in the TikTok app.
- From your home screen, click on the “Profile” icon (it’s at the bottom right) to open your TikTok profile.
- Tap the “Menu” icon (three horizontal bars) at the top right of your profile screen.
- Choose “Settings and privacy” from the popup that appears.
- Select “Notifications” from the next menu.
- Scroll to the bottom of the following page to find and click on “Email notifications.”
- To stop all types of notifications appearing in your email account, move the “All email notifications” toggle to the left. (Don’t worry; this will not prevent account verification emails from arriving.) You can also choose to stop just some categories of email notifications by using the toggles on the rest of the screen instead of the “All notifications” one.
How to Stop Getting Marketing Emails from TikTok
The above process will also eliminate most of the non-notification emails you receive, like newsletters and “insights” into your TikTok account.
If you continue to receive other types of TikTok emails, however, that means you’re on a separate mailing list and you’ll have to go old-school to stop them from arriving. Open one of the emails and click the “Unsubscribe” link at the bottom. If that doesn’t stop all of the emails, repeat until you’ve been removed from all of TikTok’s mailing lists.
It may take a week or two for the requests to be processed and take effect, but the few seconds it takes to submit them is a price worth paying for a clean and navigable email inbox.
