Building a large TikTok fan base is the ultimate goal for many content creators on the social media platform. They try to rack up as many TikTok followers as possible because a high follower count is the key to the popularity, importance, and monetization of an account.
The majority of TikTok users, though, use the app for entertainment or interaction. Some love scrolling through their feeds to watch a never-ending stream of funny, informative, or just plain cool TikTok videos. Others enjoy connecting and sharing content with old friends and new acquaintances. Many do both.
The best way to ensure that you see the type of TikTok content you like is to follow the creators who produce it. Staying in touch with old friends or making new ones on the platform starts with following them. A time-honored method of building a larger fan base is by following people who will follow you back.
And it doesn’t take much effort to get started.
How Do You Follow Someone on TikTok?
First, one caution.
Most people are delighted when they gain new followers. It’s a sign that people appreciate the content they create, or that friends and acquaintances want to connect on the platform.
Others prefer to stay out of the limelight, though, so they set their TikTok accounts to “private.” Their videos can only be seen by their followers — and no one can follow a private account unless the owner approves their follow request. (To send one, visit their TikTok profile and tap “Follow.” It’s up to the user to review and approve your request.)
Assuming you want to follow a public account, however, you can do it in several ways.
- If you know the TikTok username of the person you want to follow, use the same method we just described. Visit the user’s profile page and tap the “Follow” button. When it changes to a “Message” button, you’ve successfully followed them.
- If you’re viewing one of the user’s TikTok posts, tap the “+” underneath their profile picture on the right-hand menu. A checkmark will briefly appear to tell you that you’re now following the creator.
- If you want to find friends or others who you know are on TikTok, but don’t know their username, go to your own profile page and click on the icon that shows a person’s outline with a “+” sign. If you’ve synched your contacts with your device and/or Facebook account, you’ll see a list of suggested friends along with “Follow” buttons. If you haven’t synched your contacts yet, you can do it from that same screen.
In short, almost anywhere you go on TikTok, it’s easy to find lots of accounts you can follow with a single click.
Since we started with a caution, we’ll end with one, too. The app only lets you follow 200 people per day, and you can only follow a total of 10,000 accounts. If you’re close to your daily limit, use your follows judiciously; if you’re close to the 10,000 ceiling, you may have to unfollow some people so you can follow others whose content you discover and love.
