The comments you receive on your TikTok posts can be invaluable.
- Comments often provide the positive feedback you need to know your TikTok content is appreciated and valuable.
- Comments may give you ideas for new TikTok videos.
- Comments can help you and other TikTok users discover interesting accounts whose owners share a passion for the same topics.
- Comments boost a metric called engagement rate, and greater engagement with your post tells the TikTok algorithms that your video (as well as your TikTok account) is generating interest and deserves larger audiences.
Sadly, it doesn’t always work that way.
Trolls and spammers can interfere with the way the social media platform is supposed to work. They bombard comment sections with negative and even hateful comments, as well as spam, that may render the section (and the positive comments) meaningless or hurtful.
Thankfully, TikTok’s designers and programmers realize that. They’ve made it easy to turn off comments for individual posts (helpful if a particular video is being targeted) or all of a user’s posts (if an account is being targeted).
Here’s what you need to know.
Disallowing TikTok Comments Before Posting a Video
If you’re creating content in the TikTok editor and you know in advance that you don’t want to allow viewers to comment on it, you can turn off all comments before you upload the post.
Once you’ve finished editing and have moved on to the “Post” page (the one where you add a description and hashtags), look for the “More options” link toward the bottom of the screen. Tap it, and then move the slider next to “Allow comments” to the left. That will disable all comments on the post once it’s live.
Disallowing TikTok Comments After Posting a Video
If the comments on a video you’ve already uploaded have gotten out of hand, it’s simple to block any more from being posted.
- Open your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom of your home screen, and then look through the content grid in the middle of the page to find the video you’re concerned about.
- Tap on the video to open it full-screen, and then click the “three-dot” icon in the right-hand menu. (It’s not the same as the icon showing three dots in a thought bubble, which takes you to the video’s comments.)
- Find the “Privacy settings” icon in the bottom row of the popup window, click it, and turn off the toggle switch next to “Allow comments.”
After that, no more comments can be posted on your video, and only you will be able to see the ones that have already been created.
How to Turn Off All Comments on TikTok
It’s possible that you’ve got someone stalking you on the app and posting negative comments on all of your content. It’s possible that you’ve been bothered by spam in the past. It’s possible that you’re just not interested in what your viewers have to say.
Whatever the reason you want to prevent comments, you can change one setting and make sure your comment section stays “clean.” Here’s how to do it.
- Visit your profile page and open the menu as described above.
- Choose “Settings and privacy” from the popup window.
- Tap on “Privacy,” and then choose “Comments” at the top of the “Interactions” menu.
- At the top of the page, click on “Allow comments from.” You’ll have the option of choosing either “Everyone,” “No one,” or “Friends.” Tap “No one,” and all comments will be blocked on your posts. (If you click friends, only the people who are your mutual followers will be allowed to comment on any of your videos.)
It’s a shame that social media has become so problematic that it’s sometimes necessary to restrict comments on posts, but it’s a welcome relief to know that you’re able to do it if you have to.
