For 15 years, Twitch has been the default social media platform of choice for those who want to stream their gaming sessions, and it’s the first service most people think of when it comes to game streams.
Don’t look now, but TikTok Live has overtaken Twitch when it comes to overall streaming. With 2+ billion TikTok users, the app is now the #2 streaming service worldwide (YouTube Live is #1). And the number of gamers who have gravitated to TikTok Live is growing as well. Twitch is still on top for gaming streams, but that may no longer be the case in the next few years.
Why has TikTok become such a force in the streaming world, even though Twitch and YouTube have been around for so much longer? Three words: ease of use.
As long as you meet a few basic criteria, it’s simple to start a stream on TikTok Live without needing any special equipment or expertise, and with virtually no learning curve. The app is perfect for streaming mobile games like Candy Crush, Pokémon Go, PUBG, and many more.
Here’s how to start.
How To Get Mobile Gaming on TikTok Live
The first step (and for some, the most difficult) is making sure you’re eligible to run live streams on the platform. Here are the requirements.
- You must have at least 1,000 TikTok followers. Those who have just signed up for a TikTok account so they can share their mobile gaming will have some work to do, since they’ll need a decent-sized TikTok fan base before they can launch a stream.
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- Your account must be in good standing, with no violations or penalties.
To run a stream people will want to watch, you should also have a modern, high-performance phone, a strong WiFi connection (5 Mbps is recommended), and a high-quality microphone.
Once you’ve cleared those hurdles, these are the steps to take to go Live.
- Open the app and tap the “+” Record icon at the bottom of your home screen.
- On the “Create” screen, click “LIVE” on the bottom menu, and then choose “Mobile gaming” right above it.
- Tap “Settings,” and you can switch from your phone’s camera to screen sharing, add a topic for your Live session, choose the game you’ll be playing, set your video quality (1080p and 60 FPS are ideal for high-quality game sharing) and mode (portrait mode shows a vertical display, ideal for mobile phones).
- Click the “Start Broadcast” button.
- Open the game you’ll be streaming, and you’re live.
You can also stream more involved games from your computer, but it’s best to use streaming software like OBS and link to TikTok to do that. For mobile gaming, TikTok is the simplest way to go!
