It’s not a big deal. It’s just annoying if you’re in a hurry.
You might occasionally open the TikTok app to check your notifications or spend a few minutes scrolling through your feed — and find that you’ve been logged out of your account.
Don’t worry; you probably didn’t do anything wrong. It’s possible that there was a system glitch that caused you to be logged out by accident. Stuff happens, even at multi-billion-dollar companies that rely on advanced technology to keep everything running smoothly.
In most cases, though, you were logged out of TikTok because the social media platform is implementing security protocols that are built into the system.
Here’s what might have happened.
Why You May Be Logged Out of Your TikTok Account
These are the most likely issues that can cause you to be logged out of the app unexpectedly.
1. Unusual Activity on Your Account
TikTok is always watching for possible signs of an account being compromised.
- If you’ve moved, or gone on vacation, or traveled to a location where you don’t normally use the app, you might have been logged out to ensure that someone hasn’t taken or stolen the device. Requiring you to log in again ensures that an authorized TikTok user who has the correct username and password is using the app.
- If you’ve removed an active device in your TikTok settings, the platform sees that as a possible indication that someone is trying to hack or take over your account. You’re automatically logged out until you supply the legitimate credentials needed to log back in.
- If someone else has unsuccessfully tried to log into your account, the system may suspect that you’ve lost control of your TikTok presence and logged out all devices connected to the app. You’ll have to log in successfully to regain access.
Whenever you experience an unexpected logout, it’s smart to immediately change your password the next time you log in. If someone has tried to hack or compromise your account, you’re better safe than sorry.
2. An App Update
TikTok regularly pushes updates to different versions of the app. The process is seamless and users generally don’t notice — but some updates, depending on the features they affect, may also require any open instances of the app to be logged out.
That’s not unusual on any social app, and it’s nothing to worry about.
3. You’re Logged in on Many Devices
Many people are logged in on a couple of phones or devices at the same time, like their primary smartphone and the iPad they use while hanging out at home. But if the system sees multiple active TikTok sessions, particularly if they’re in widely varying locations, they may all be logged out for security purposes.
4. You Cleared Your TikTok Cache
The cache is where your app stores videos and other files. When it’s too full, TikTok runs slowly and you may not be able to perform some functions. The way to solve that issue is to empty the cache to create additional storage space. However, the app often logs you out once you’ve cleared the cache. Again, it’s nothing to worry about. Just log back in and you’re good to go.
5. You Have a Bad Internet Connection
If TikTok “loses touch” with your app for a prolonged period, it automatically logs you out. Check to make sure your network connection is strong and isn’t interrupted regularly; if it is, move to a different location, reboot your modem or router, or change to a network that provides a stronger signal.
If you don’t think any of these issues have caused the problem, make sure that you don’t see a notification when logging back in that you’ve violated TikTok’s terms and conditions or Community Standards when you try to log back in. If your account has been suspended or banned, you’re automatically logged out.
And if you still can’t prevent your account from being logged out regularly, contact TikTok support through the “Settings and privacy” page accessible from your TikTok profile menu. A support rep may be able to shed some light on what’s causing your specific issue.
