TikTok’s Invisible Filter: Can You Remove It On Android?

3 min read

TikTok is well known for the huge assortment of filters and effects that content creators use to alter the appearance of the videos they create.

From subtle beauty and retro filters, to over-the-top effects that can “turn” TikTok users into anime characters or add “bling” to their content, these editing tricks give TikTok videos distinctive and fun looks. Some even start new trends on the social media platform.

One of the more recent filters added to the app is its “Invisible Body” option, and videos created with it have racked up hundreds of millions of views.

Let’s learn more.

What Is the TikTok Invisible Filter?

Creators have been fascinated with what’s sometimes called the “invisibility” filter ever since it was added to the app a couple of years ago.

When this filter is applied to TikTok content, it acts much like a green screen to make the body’s skin tone look the same color as the nearby background. When you record someone (or yourself) against a relatively neutral background, just about all that’s visible is their profile; the rest of their body and features are virtually impossible to distinguish.

In a nutshell, it doesn’t really make video subjects look “invisible,” but it comes as close as possible with the technology built into an app — and the filter is a lot of fun to use. The effect is somewhat different if the background is busy and colorful, as the person’s skin takes on colors and appearances that match the objects around and behind them.

The introduction of TikTok’s invisibility filter triggered an enormously viral trend for quite a while, as users loved “turning themselves invisible” and sharing the results. It’s not quite as big a deal these days, but “invisible videos” still trend regularly.

The filter has also triggered an ethical debate on the platform.

Can You Remove the TikTok Invisibility Filter?

Adding the filter to a video you’re creating is simple.

You can select it from the “Filters” lineup while you’re creating a new TikTok post. You can remove it just as easily, as long as you’re still in the process of editing your new video. Just as with any other TikTok filter or effect, however, once you’ve uploaded content, any edits you’ve made can’t be changed and the filters and effects can’t be deleted or changed.

That hasn’t stopped many users from trying to figure out methods to remove the invisibility filter from a TikTok video. They may want to see who the person is whose skin and features have been “made invisible,” or they might think there’s nudity that’s being obscured, or they could believe that someone describing themselves one way may look very different in real life.

Whatever their reason for trying to remove the filter, many others were horrified at the idea. They saw it as an invasion of the personal space, privacy, and choices of creators who used the invisible feature, and many heated arguments raged on the subject.

Those debates were solely academic, though.

Once a filter has been added to a TikTok video, only the creator can remove it before the post has been published. There’s no way to “look behind the curtain,” no matter whether you’re using an Android or iPhone, no matter whether you use advanced editing tools — and no matter what click-baiters may claim in videos or websites where they promise to unveil the secret.

There is no secret. You can’t remove TikTok’s invisibility filter, period. And it’s probably better that way.
