TikTok’s Voice Effects: They’re Great If You Can Find Them

One of the best ways to make a TikTok video stand out is to use the app’s voice effects.

Changing your voice into that of a robot, a chipmunk, a giant, or the “Trickster” (the social media platform’s most popular option) is virtually guaranteed to keep viewers watching and laughing. You can also make your voice deeper, higher, or sound like you’re speaking through a megaphone or to a large crowd, among many of the other available effects.

It’s easy to do, too.

Tap the “+” icon to enter the TikTok “Create” screen, choose your video’s length, and hit the big white button to record. Click the red checkmark when you’re done. You’ll be taken to the “Editing” screen, where tapping on the “Voice” icon (a microphone) shows you all the voice effects you can choose from. Click “Save,” finish editing, and upload your TikTok post.

You now have a distinctive video that will stand out when people come across it in their TikTok feeds.

Some people find, though, that they’re unable to access the system’s voice effects.

Why Don’t I Have Voice Effects on TikTok?

There are three major reasons why you may not be able to find the voice effects menu while working with TikTok content.

  1. You’re trying to add the effects to a pre-recorded video that you’ve uploaded from your phone or device (or from another app). Voice effects are only available for audio that has been recorded directly in the app that’s installed on your phone.
  2. You’re trying to add voice effects to a Duet or Stitch that you’ve created. The system won’t let you change your voice (or anyone else’s) in either of those formats.
  3. You’ve already added a TikTok sound (or audio from another source). The music prevents you from accessing voice effects; you’ll have to change your voice and then add a TikTok sound if you want both to be heard in your video. If you accidentally added the song first, tap the “x” next to its title to remove it, choose voice effect, and then re-add the song.

Several less-common issues can also stop you from using TikTok’s voice changer.

  • TikTok is experiencing a brief (and rare) technical glitch. Wait a few minutes and try again.
  • Not all TikTok functions are available if your app is locking up or out of date, or if your storage is full. Try logging out and back in, restarting your phone, clearing your app and phone caches, or downloading the latest version of the app.
  • The app may not work properly if your Internet connection is bad. Make sure you have a solid connection or try switching networks to see if those are causing the problem.

Adding voice effects to a TikTok video is one of the easiest editing tricks you can use on the app, and major problems with the voice changer are rare. Do your troubleshooting and try again; you’ll find that solving the problem was well worth the effort.
