Reposting a TikTok video is an effective way to show that you not only liked the post but liked it so much that you wanted others to be able to see it. It’s also a gracious way to show your appreciation to the TikTok user who produced the video, expanding audience and reach for both the post and the creator’s TikTok account.
That doesn’t mean everyone will be able to see your repost, though.
- It will only be visible to your existing TikTok followers if your entire account is set to “private,” in the same way that your own TikTok posts can only be viewed by your fans.
- No one else can see your reposts if you’ve decided to make them private. (Why would someone do that? Many users repost privately just so they can easily find a video in their profile.)
However, reposts from a public account are public by default. Both your followers and anyone who finds your profile or knows your username (so they can find you in a TikTok search) can see them. They will also show up on everyone else’s For You feeds.
You only have to “do something” to make your reposts visible to everyone if you’ve previously changed the repost setting to private. And if you only want to make one of your reposts public, you can do that, too.
Let’s explore.
Making Your TikTok Reposts Public or Private
To change the universal setting for your reposts, here’s what to do.
- Visit your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of your home screen.
- Open the profile menu by clicking the three horizontal lines at the top right of your profile screen.
- Choose “Settings and privacy” from the popup menu.
- Tap “Privacy” and scroll down to “Repost,” which is right below “Liked videos.” Set the toggle switch to “off” if you want to keep reposts private, or to “on” to make them all public.
This feature is relatively new and may not be available on all versions of the app or in some parts of the world. If you don’t see it, you may have to update your app or wait until the private repost option is rolled out where you live.
Making Just One Repost Public
Those who keep their reposts private have the option to share one that they found particularly enjoyable. It’s as simple as 1-2-3.
- Go to your profile screen, look in the content grid for the repost that you want to make public (they’re under the icon showing three reverse arrows), and tap it to open it.
- On the right-hand menu, click the three-dot “More options” icon (not the three dots in a speech bubble, which is the “Comments” icon).
- Tap the “Privacy settings” option on the popup that appears, and choose whether you want to make the repost visible to “Everyone,” “Friends,” or leave it set to “Only you.”
That’s it. If you chose “Everyone,” your repost is now shared with the TikTok world.
