What Is The “What Do You Meme” TikTok Edition?

A popular card game played at parties now has a “TikTok edition” — but somewhat surprisingly, you don’t play it on the app.

“What Do You Meme,” as you’d probably guess, is based on the Internet memes that have been ubiquitous on social media platforms for the last few decades. The card game, which is described as an “adult” game because of its often raunchy content, was introduced on Kickstarter in 2016 and became a top-ten game on Amazon a year later.

“What Do You Meme” has remained popular ever since, and in 2020, a “TikTok edition” was released. It’s only based on TikTok, though; it’s not designed to be played on TikTok.

Even so, the app is loaded with #whatdoyoumeme hashtags, and more than five million TikTok posts on the topic have been uploaded to the app so far.

Let’s learn more.

How Do You Play “What Do You Meme?”

The game is simple.

“What Do You Meme” is designed for 3-20 players. One is designated the “judge” for each round, and they draw one of 75 “meme” cards. The other players draw hands from the game’s 360 “caption” cards, and each selects the card from their hand that they think best matches the meme that the judge has drawn.

The judge decides which player’s caption is the funniest submission, and that player wins the round and earns a point. The player with the most points at the end of the round is declared the winner.

What’s Different About the TikTok Edition?

Gameplay is the same for the “What Do You Meme” TikTok edition.

The only difference is that the memes and captions are selected from actual TikTok posts created by popular content creators on the app. The “twist” is that each meme has a QR code on the back, allowing players to pull up and watch the actual post that the card was based on.

The TikTok edition is one of many themed games and expansion packs produced by the game’s original creators, ranging from “teacher” and “real estate” versions to “SpongeBob SquarePants” and “Seinfeld” editions. There’s also a family edition suitable for kids to play.

What Do TikTok Videos Have to Do with the Game?

“What Do You Meme” continues to be an extremely popular game, and millions of players have posted TikTok content about it. A quick search for the hashtag turns up demos, videos of actual gameplay, and montages of winning memes and their captions.

#whatdoyoumeme videos have regularly trended on the app, and it doesn’t appear that the fascination with the game will die out anytime soon.
