Every era has had popular and meaningful love songs.
Among them were “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers in the 60s, “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton in the 70s, “Endless Love” by Diana Ross and Lionel Richie in the 80s, and “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston in the 90s. More recently, “I Will Always Love You,” Crazy in Love” by Béyonce ft. Jay-Z, and “All of Me” by John Legend have made the list.
TikTok is dominated by Gen Z and millennials. In the US, for example, they represent almost 70% of all TikTok users. That’s why it’s natural for people in those age groups, as well as those in Gen A and even boomers here and there, to express their feelings for other users with TikTok videos featuring modern love songs.
One that isn’t quite recent, but has stood the test of time, is an extremely popular song from 2010. It’s regularly used in heartfelt TikTok content that declares undying love, often to the point where it can seem that the song is trending on the app.
“Even When the Sun Don’t Shine” on TikTok
The lyrics of the song “Sure Thing” by Miguel make it obvious why it’s such a popular choice for love videos on TikTok:
“Even when the sky comes falling,
Even when the sun don’t shine,
I got faith in you and I,
So put your pretty little hand in mine.”
And even when the song itself isn’t used as a sound in a TikTok post, it’s so well-known that just speaking the line “Even when the sun don’t shine” conveys a message of undying love, commitment, perseverance, and optimism about a relationship.
The first two words in the sentence are crucial, however.
“Where the Sun Don’t Shine”
Videos or comments about the sun not shining don’t always signify love. You may see other, similar phrases on TikTok that have very different meanings.
- “Stick it where the sun don’t shine” is a phrase that dates back many decades, and these days, it often takes the form of “shove it where the sun don’t shine.” As most people know (or can guess), it’s a vulgar rejection of a comment, offer, or something else that is seen as insulting or offensive; “where the sun don’t shine,” of course, refers to the person’s rear end.
- “Imma touch u where the sun don’t shine” and variations on the phrase are commonly seen in TikTok content. While it could theoretically be used in a suggestive sexual context, it’s used as a threat much more often.
Bottom line: Be sure to listen to or read all the words before assuming what’s meant by a phrase you hear or see on TikTok that includes the words “the sun don’t shine.”
