What’s Happening With TikTok Today?

That’s a question people often ask, and they can be asking about several different things.

  • They may have experienced a problem accessing or using TikTok and they want to know if something’s wrong.
  • They may be wondering if there have been any new feature updates or new versions of the app released.
  • They may be asking what’s going on with the US government’s threat to shut the social media platform down unless it’s sold to non-Chinese owners.

Let’s dig into each possibility.

Is TikTok Having Technical Issues?

This article is almost certainly being written on a different day than the one you’re reading it on — so we can’t authoritatively tell you if tech issues are plaguing TikTok “today.”

What we can tell you is that every online platform, including TikTok, occasionally experiences technical glitches. As the world’s fifth most popular social app, TikTok is certainly more likely to have brief outages or internal issues than smaller sites. They’re quite rare, though, they’re usually resolved within minutes, and they don’t usually interfere with the user experience.

If you suspect a problem on TikTok’s end, you can check to see if reputable trackers like Downdetector (downdetector.com/status/tiktok) report issues affecting connectivity, the website, or the app, or ask a friend who uses TikTok if they’re also having issues.

More likely, the problem you’re experiencing is on your end. Check your network connection, clear your cache, reboot TikTok or your phone, and see if you have the latest TikTok version. If necessary, download the new version to your phone. Solving those issues should let you get back on the app.

Does TikTok Have Any New Features or Versions Planned?

Announcements of new TikTok features usually aren’t made in advance. The company does occasionally let it be known when they’re testing new functions, and as of this writing, the latest news is that Footnotes, a version of community-sourced information designed to provide more context to TikTok posts, is now being tested.

Others in the works include AI-powered alt text generation, a “Reviews” tab to appear in the comments section, and an in-app guided meditation function. Integration of SoundCloud into TikTok’s “Add to Music” feature, and the addition of DMs to TikTok live streams, are also on the way.

TikTok generally rolls its new features out gradually, so it may be a while before any or all of these functions are available where you live.

As for app versions, there’s no published schedule for when a new one is due. You’ll probably learn the news first on TikTok.

What’s Going on With TikTok in the US?

A bill was passed in early 2025 banning TikTok in America unless it’s sold by its Chinese owners, and the law was upheld by the United States Supreme Court.

The Trump administration is still holding off on enforcing that law, though, and there are continuing reports that negotiations for the sale of TikTok are underway. As of this writing, the app is still available in the US and there’s no sign that any changes to the platform’s availability or ownership are imminent.

For now, it’s business as usual on TikTok.

Spicy TikTok: It’s Probably Not What You Think

TikTok’s terms and conditions and Community Standards prohibit content that includes nudity (or implied nudity), sexually suggestive or explicit material, and non-consensual intimate imagery. In short, “spicy TikTok” isn’t what you might think it is. Those who grew up in the early days of cable TV or when “men’s magazines” were popular wouldn’t immediately guess […]

Public vs. Private TikTok Accounts: How To Choose

When you’re 18 or older and open a TikTok account, it’s public by default. If you’re 16 or 17, it’s set to private but you can change it to a public account if you’d like. Those under the age of 16 will always have private accounts, but they can “go public” when they turn 16. […]
