One of the most frustrating aspects of modern-day life can be summed up in one word: passwords.
Sure, third-party authentication may come close on the frustration scale, but the sheer number of passwords we all have to remember or save has become overwhelming. It’s even worse to keep track of them all when websites or apps require you to periodically change your password.
Thankfully, you aren’t regularly required to select a new TikTok password, although the social media platform’s guidelines do recommend changing it every 30 days. Security is always paramount, though, so you might want to take TikTok’s advice and pick a new password at least every so often.
As long as you remember your old one — and that’s not always a given, now that so many people use facial recognition or touch ID instead of passwords on their phone — changing your TikTok password takes just a minute or two.
How To Change Your TikTok Password
Important: You can only change your password on the TikTok app. It can’t be done on the online TikTok website.
Log into the app, and then:
- Visit your TikTok profile by tapping the “Profile” icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- Open the profile menu by clicking the menu icon (three horizontal lines) at the top right of the profile page.
- Choose “Setting and privacy” in the pop-up window, and then choose the “Account” option.
- Tap the “Password” link and verify either the email address or phone number you used to sign up. You’ll be sent a code to enter in the appropriate field on the app screen.
- You’ll then be asked to confirm your old password and choose a new one. Confirm your choice, and you’re all set.
What Do You Do If You’ve Forgotten Your Current Password?
The process is similar.
When you’re at the TikTok login screen and can’t remember your password, tap the “Forgot password?” link. You’ll be asked for the email or phone number you joined with; enter the code that you’re sent via email or text, and you’ll be prompted to change your password.
If you’re logged into the app but need to recover your current password so you can change it, go to Profile > Menu > Settings and privacy > Report a problem > Account and profile > Login. Tap the “Forgot password” option and follow the instructions, which will be similar to those listed above.
